Outpatient clinic for Pain and Pain Relief

In 2000, the NIPO investigated the occurrence of chronic pain in the Dutch population of 18 years and older. They showed that 20% of the population suffers from chronic pain. Chronic pain is currently the most common reason for consulting a general practitioner or physician. It is expected that the group of patients with chronic pain will even increase due to the growing number of elderly. Moreover, postoperative pain and acute pain due to cancer play a central role in clinical care.

De outpatient clinic for Pain and Pain Relief focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic complaints of pain, including back pain and limb pain. The outpatient clinic is further specialized in palliative care in collaboration with the Stichting Kuria, and is known for its expertise with respect to the diagnosis, treatment and scientific research for the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). In addition, the Acute Pain Service provides support for patients with specific pain complaints who are admitted to the VUmc, in particular in collaboration with the departments of Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Vascular Surgery, Oncology and General Surgery.
